Gonçalo Byrne

Biography

  • 1968 - he graduated in architecture at ESBAL and began research at the National Institute of Building Engineering in Lisbon.
    1975 - He opened his own practice in Lisbon.
    1986/88 - He was appointed Professor of Architectural Design at the Arvore Cooperative in Porto;
    1988 - He received the National Architecture Prize promoted by the order of Portuguese architects and the Ministry of Culture;
    1990/91 - He was visiting professor at the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale in Lausanne.
    1991 - He founded GB Arquitectos Lda as senior partner.
    1992 - He was visiting professor at the Department of Architecture in the Faculty of Science and Technology at Coimbra University.
    1992/93 - He was visiting professor at Leuven University.
    1993 - He founded GBMM Arquitectos Associados Lda with Manuel Aires Mateus.1993/94 - He was visiting professor at Leuven University.
    1994 - He took part in the "Architecture and cities" design workshop held in Naples.
    1994 - He took part in the 4th "Projectar la periferia" city planning workshop held in Barcelona.
    1995 - He was visiting professor at the Venice University Institute of Architecture;
    he became the chief editor of "Journal Arquitectos";
    he received the Acquisition/Architecture prize;
    exhibitions of his work were held in Como, Catania, Lisbon, Ljubjana, Lucca, Messina, Milan, New York, Oporto, San Marino, Trevi, Venice
    2000- he was awarded the Gold Medal of the Academie d'Architecture de France.
