1937 - He began studying at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen
1942 - Graduated in architecture
1942/45 - He lived in Stockholm
1945 - He was apprenticed to the practices of Gunnar Asplund and Alvar Aalto
1947/48 - Study tour through Europe and Morocco, where he was deeply influenced by Islamic building methods and techniques
1947/48 - He lived in Paris
1949 - Study tour in Mexico and the United States where he made contact with Frank Lloyd Wright and Mies van der Rohe
1950 - He set up his own practice in Denmark
1952 - He went into partnership with Enrik and Henry Andersson, Swedish architects
1957 - First journey to Sydney
1957 - Journey to China, Japan and Nepal to study traditional forms of oriental architecture
1957 - He was awarded the Eckensberg medal for architecture
1958 - Journey to Sydney
1960 - Journey to Iran where he studied the town planning structures of cities, bazaars, pottery ornaments
1963 - He moved with his family to Sydney to supervise the building of the Opera House
1965 - He was made an honorary member of the Royal Australian Institute of Architects and designed the collar for its chairman
1966 - He received a mention and honour diploma from the Bund Deutscher Architekten
1966 - Following disagreements with the Australian government, Utzon resigned from the Opera House project and left Australia
1970 - He was awarded the C. F. Hansen medal for architecture
1970 - He was made an honorary member of the American Institute of Architects
1971/75 - He moved to Hawaii to teach at the University of Honolulu
1973 - He was awarded the gold medal of the Royal Australian Institute of Architects
1978 - He received the Princess Eugenia of Sweden medal for architecture
1979 - He was awarded the gold medal of the Royal Institute of British Architects
1981 - He received the Danske Arkitektur Landsforbund award
1982 - He received the architectural award from the National Danish Association of Architects
with his sons Jan and Kim he set up "Utzon Associates"
1985 - He received the Alvar Aalto medal in Helsinki
1986 - He was made an honorary member of the General Division of the Order of Australia
1992 - He was awarded the Nykridits award for architecture
1994 - He was awarded the gold medal of the Académie d'Architecture in Paris
