Snøhetta & White Arkitekter'a new Väven cultural centre opens in Umeå, Sweden

The recently opened Väven cultural centre designed by Snøhetta and White Arkitekter is seen as an important catalyst for urban renewal in the city of Umeå, Sweden.

The cultural centre stands on the Ume River, and the strips on its façade seem to be inspired by the movement of the current in the river and by weaving. The centre’s name, "Väven", is Swedish for weave, and the centre weaves together a variety of different cultural activities and public functions.

The façade system alternating slightly offset opaque white and dark glass strips winds around the centre’s different spirits and encloses them in a single complex with an appearance recalling the birch trees typical of Umeå. The architects use glass as the principal material of the façade to ensure that it interacts with and reflects its surroundings, particularly the river.
