NOUVELLES ARCHITECTURES, FRAC exhibition, Paris

FRAC stands for Fonds Régionaux d’Art Contemporain, regional contemporary art collections established in 1982 by Jack Lang, the French Minister of Culture and Communication.

The purpose of the twenty-three FRACs ? one for each French region ? is to disseminate, promote and collect contemporary art through initiatives, exhibitions and meetings. Over thirty years, 26.000 works have been conserved for 4200 French and international artists, quickly filling the available spaces and making it necessary to build specific, suitable structures.

Six of the 23 French regions have completed or are constructing new buildings for the sole purpose of housing the FRACs. The exhibition to be held at the Pompidou Centre in Paris honours the FRACs by displaying these six projects, designed by internationally renowned architects: the BIG architecture firm, in association with Freaks designed the building in Bordeaux; the ODBC team (Odile Decq + Benoît Cornette) in Rennes; Jakob+MacFarlane in Orléans; Japanese architect Kengo Kuma & Associates in Besançon and Marseille and Anne Lacaton and Jean-Philippe Vassal in Dunkirk.
