KAAN Architecten Renovating a Public Building

In Hertogenbosch, Holland, the firm of architects KAAN Architecten signed a project for the renovation of the Maaskant’s Provinciehuis, a public building designed in the seventies by the Dutch architect Hugh Maaskant.
The building, originally unloved by public opinion, as it was considered too large and expensive, has in the forty years since its creation, become a symbol for public service as well as an important architectural element in the region’s landscape.
The Dutch firm KAAN Architecten took up the challenge proposed by the public authority of the Provincie Noord-Brabant to work on the construction in order to recover the spatial quality of the original building and adapt it to meet contemporary requirements.

The architects used a very personal approach in their work, while respecting the architectural ideas of Maaskant, to provide spacious areas that promote interaction between civil servants and citizens. The main changes include: the rethinking of the horizontal entrance area of the building, open on three levels of the construction, and of the workstations in the office tower block. Specifically, the offices in the tower have been replaced with flexible work spaces better suited to modern work dynamics.
