Herzog & de Meuron, Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM)

The new Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) building designed by Herzog & de Meuron is now open.
The architects assigned great importance to the site, transferring into the architectural project what they considered the most important characteristics of Miami: its climate, luxurious vegetation and cultural diversity.

The new building is a landmark on the urban scene, raised above ground level and open on all sides so as to face the park, the water and the city, all at the same time. The area underneath the platform, dotted by supporting columns, becomes a public space for receiving visitors.

All this helps make the museum a place of transition from the street to art and an ideal continuation of the park; even the difference in temperature between the inside and the outside is mitigated by the microclimate created by the tropical plants covering the structure. The architects of Herzog & de Meuron worked around the idea that the museum is a public space for everybody, not an isolated treasure chest of art for trained eyes only.
