Gabinete de Arquitectura Golden Lion at the 2016 Biennale in Venice

Gabinete de Arquitectura, the Paraguayan studio run by Solano Benítez, Gloria Cabral and Solanito Benítez, has been named best participant in the 15th Architecture Exhibition, REPORTING FROM THE FRONT, curated by Alejandro Aravena for Biennale di Venezia. The studio was presented with a Golden Lion by the International Jury "for putting together primary materials, structural simplicity and unqualified labour to bring quality architecture to communities that had been excluded from it".

Gabinete de Arquitectura’s project Breaking the siege, in the Central Pavilion at the Gardens of the Biennale, is a construction system perfected by the architects and used in projects such as the Centro de Rehabilitación Infantil Theleton or the Quincho Tia Coral in Paraguay.
The system uses simple materials widely available locally, bricks and mortar, and unspecialised workers to build even the largest structures.

The big structure arching over the central pavilion built with a ribbing system constructed using bricks and mortar offers Biennale visitors a practical example of how an impressive urban construction can be made even with low-tech construction techniques.
