Broad Museum: Diller Scofidio + Renfro Los Angeles

The Contemporary Art museum of Los Angeles, the Broad, which opened its doors to the public a year ago, and was designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro in collaboration with Gensler, obtained the LEED Gold certification: Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design.

The certification involves the sustainability practices and energy saving solutions implemented in the building during the design and management phases. A system of good practices and solutions was implemented, also ensuring excellent environmental conditions for the exhibited work and the well-being of visitors. The initiatives and the sustainability good practices implemented in the museum include charging stations for electric cars, bicycle parking, rainwater recovery and recycling, and even recycling of the museum leaflets at the end of the visit.
Among several solutions, the design attributed great importance to natural light, so as to limit the use of artificial light. The architects designed the rooms in a way allowing the light to enter the building and reach the different areas indirectly. A system of skylights and filters controlled by digital devices allow for the control and modulation of natural light to protect the works of art. A series of sensors integrated with LED lights allow for the adjustment of the artificial light depending on the external conditions and the available natural light, so as to correctly illuminate the rooms and the works of art.
