In view of the transformations underway as the city prepares for Expo 2015, the current exhibition at Fondazione Riccardo Catella looks at how the skyline of Milan has evolved through 80 skyscrapers built over the past century.

Cloudscraper: A century of skyscrapers in Milan exhibition

From the “cloud-scraper” designed by engineer Achille Manfredini in 1910 to the new skyscrapers in Porta Nuova, from BBPR’s Torre Velasca to Il Portello by Cino Zucchi Architetti, the new Region of Lombardy building designed by Pei Cobb Freed & Partners and Caputo Partnership and the Isozaki Tower by Arata Isozaki and Andrea Maffei: 80 towers and skyscrapers built in Milan over the past century are featured in the exhibition “Grattanuvole. Un Secolo di Grattacieli a Milano ” (Cloudscraper: A century of skyscrapers in Milan).
In view of the completion of the new constructions for Expo 2015, the current exhibition at Fondazione Riccardo Catella takes stock of and documents the transformations in the city skyline due to construction of skyscrapers, with a special focus on the Porta Nuova projects. The materials on exhibit include original drawings, artistic photographs and an exhibition of photos by Marco Garofalo, an installation entitled “Nociòn Transversal Grattacielli 014-1/2”, measuring 8m x 1.5m, by Mexican artist Raymundo Sesma, as well as video interviews with architects such as the designers of Porta Nuova, magazine editors and architecture critics including Francesco Dal Co, Carlo Olmo, Mario Botta, Pierluigi Nicolin, Stefano Boeri, Cino Zucchi, Italo Rota and Fulvio Irace.
