Brooks + Scarpa Architects, Metalsa, Mexico

The Metalsa premises designed by Brooks + Scarpa are located in Mexico’s Research and Technology Innovation Park (PIIT), set up under a partnership between the government, the university and private enterprises to promote economic growth through research in a variety of innovative technologies (nanotechnologies, biotechnologies, information technologies, green technologies) and development of advanced materials.

The aim for the architects of Brooks + Scarpa was to build an industrial building that would respond to the requirements of production while at the same time serving as a model for innovation in the working environment, a space serving the needs of visitors and users alike.
The building has two outstanding features: a saw-toothed roof of the type traditionally associated with factory buildings, which in this case also pays homage to the landscape and natural surroundings; and a perforated aluminium metallic skin covering the façade to create an effect of alternation of full and empty volumes and light and shadow while ensuring privacy in the research area.
