Logistics: the vertical warehouse. A company’s excellence can be measured by how it organises the logistics of its deliveries. Iris Ceramica has organised a vertical warehouse dedicated exclusively to storage of its floor and wall tiles. The fully automated warehouse can work with up to 18,400 pallets. The order is followed by an automated system that governs it from preparation to loading destination. And goods are also controlled visually, with illuminated boards that show the name and code of the completed order all along the route. When working with small quantities, human intervention is important to optimise loads. An identity card is applied to each box containing bar codes and information permitting management of more than 4000 products stored in the warehouse. A process of this kind permits shipment of 40,000 square metres of tiles all over the world every day: that’s 900 thousand a month, or about ten million a year.

Decoration Studio. The history of ceramics is intertwined with the history of decoration, from signs to organic shapes, from geometric forms to shaded colours and contemporary designs inspired by the worlds of fashion and graphic design. The new technologies help make all this possible, permitting subtleties of hue that were unthinkable in mass production until recently. Without neglecting the importance of manual craftsmanship, the true added value in decoration, giving each item its own unique character.
Material grafting is now very valuable, a timeless discipline in which gold, platinum and relief textures become the new classics. And so decoration continues its long history of following the trends and the fashions without neglecting its roots in hand craftsmanship.
