UNStudio recently announced the completion of ‘King David the Builder’ International Airport in Kutaisi, Georgia. The studio’s project includes not only the airport terminal and an overhaul of the runway, but a master plan for the local landscape and future development of the area, including construction of a meteorological station and a control tower.

The idea underlying the project by the architects of UNStudio is an all-inclusive, sheltering volume which is transparent from the outside. Inside the building, an umbrella-shaped structure becomes a roundabout guiding arriving and departing passengers. Architect Ben van Berkel explains that the brightly lit space, large spaces and high ceilings of the terminal building are intended to make departure and arrival into times of celebration, as was the case in old-fashioned railway stations.
