MVRDV Flower Building Shanghai Hongqiao Airport

The Flower Building is the first building completed as part of the masterplan for a commercial centre designed by the MVRDV architecture studio currently under construction in China, in an area near Shanghai Hongqiao Airport and the high speed train station.
The MVRDV architecture studio won the competition to design the centre in 2013 and the Flower Building will be its reference point. The masterplan contains another nine buildings which will be completed in early 2016.
The MVRDV project aims to create spaces with a human dimension in an area that has wide avenues with fast traffic flows.
The Flower Building is located near one of the new underground stations, in a building with high energy efficiency, made up of four volumes linked by an upper level. The ground floor is for shops and in the centre of the building is a square that is partly shaded. The architects have chosen rounded forms to enhance the views on the surroundings and the continuity of the facades. The shape of the building means that there are shady spaces and encourages natural ventilation. The roof of the Flower Building, like the other nine buildings under construction, will be a roof garden filled with local plant species.
