A project for the community, a reference point on the seafront and a social meeting place: this, in short are the acoustic shells designed by architect Flanagan Lawrence in Littlehampton, West Sussex, UK.
The project entitled Acoustic Shells created near the beach at Littlehampton, West Sussex, UK, by architect Flanagan Lawrence is one of the seven finalists of the RIBA Stephen Lawrence Prize 2015. The architect, Flanagan Lawrence, has created a project aimed at the community, to offer a meeting place for social aggregation and, at the same time, a visual reference point for the seafront.
The two shells are made without formwork with the concrete sprayed directly onto the reinforcement mesh. They meet the need to give the existing public park a meeting place and are inspired both by sand dunes and by stages for band concerts installed all over the UK after the creation of the first stage in 1861 at the Royal Horticultural Society Gardens in South Kensington.
The architect offers a contemporary interpretation of these stages, starting with the idea that modern music is a popular, social phenomenon that is no longer restricted to elite players. The Acoustic Shells, as the name underlines, are designed to reflect sound, the first aimed towards the city of which it becomes a main stage at the edge of a large green lawn. The second faces the beach, where it becomes a refuge, a place where you can be protected and listen to the sound of the sea or where street artists can perform on the seafront.
