The Floating Piers, a work of art by Christo and Jeanne-Claude in Italy reinterpreting Lake Iseo and connecting the island of San Paolo to the mainland through a modular system of floating piers covered with iridescent yellow fabric, will be inaugurated on June 18.
"Walking on the water" of Lake Iseo, observing the view from a completely different and unusual perspective, will be possible between June 18 and July 3 thanks to a work created by Christo and Jeanne-Claude on Lake Iseo in Italy.
More than 40 years after his last Italian project, produced in Rome in 1974 (The Wall, Wrapped Roman Wall, wrapping a section of the Aurelian Walls), the well-known artist is back in Italy to create a large-scale land art project.
Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s last large-scale project was The Gate, a 37 km path built across New York’s Central Park in 2005. After the death of Jeanne-Claude in November 2009, Christo carried on working to complete the projects they had come up with together: Over The River and The Mastaba.
An idea the two artists discussed in 1970 also inspires The Floating Piers, a project reinterpreting the landscape and creating a temporay installation on the waters of Lake Iseo: a pedestrian path composed of 70,000 square metres of iridescent yellow fabric supported by a series of modular piers 16 metres wide and 50 cm high, with sloping edges, made out of 200,000 high density polyethylene cubes.
The floating path will float with the waves and form a circle from Sulzano to Monte Isola and up to the island of San Paolo. Like all Christo’s previous projects, the work was financed solely with funds from the sale of the artist’s works and will be free for visitors. All the components will be removed and recycled when the installation’s exhibition time is over.
