Kristin Jarmund

Biography

Norwegian architect and interior designer Kristin Jarmund (1954) is best known for her works in her homeland, particularly in her native city of Oslo.
In the Norwegian capital, Jarmund is one of the most important architects of the last several decades, sought after by both private clients and national institutions, thanks to projects created for various types buildings: hotels, schools, offices, cafés and restaurants, as well as the famous metro station of Nydalen (2003), which was recently expanded.

Jarmund studied at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in Trondheim and at the Architectural Association School of Architecture in London, and was employed by the architectural firm Telje-Torp-Aasen Arkitektkontor from 1978 to1983.
In 1985 she opened her own firm, Kristin Jarmund Arkitekter AS, and began her professional career winning an award for the construction of the Fyrstikkterrassen office complex in the Helsfyr suburb of Oslo (completed in 1991).

Her work focuses on solutions that reduce complex problems to simplicity of form and function. Applying a design language of remarkable clarity, in terms of both colour and in the attention to detail, her works have often been characterized as “new functionalism”, reinterpreted and developed in a very contemporary key.
Another distinctive aspect of Jarmund’s work is the importance give to the interior spaces. She has often spoken of “interior façade” to indicate the design of the indoor spaces, which are given the same importance as the building exterior.

Multipurpose urban buildings and educational structures stand out among her range of works, including the schools of Benterud in Lørenskog and Gulskogen in Dramme, as well as the Stensby kindergarten in Eidsvoll (1994), for which Jarmund was selected to represent Norway in the 1996 Venice Biennale as part of the “Nordic Light” exhibit.
Her firm has carried out a number of projects for the renovation of public spaces, including one in Majorstuhuset, the new theatre of Oslo and the National Gallery, the Nydalen metro station (2003), the headquarters of Fokus Bank at Stortingsgaten 6 (2005), the National Dental Faculty in Bergen (2012), the Norwegian Embassy building in Kathmandu (2008) and the residence of the ambassador to Nepal (2012), showing in each of these “a perfect blend of classic and modern”.
As an interior designer, her major works include the Bar and Restaurant located in the 1930s neoclassical building known as Majorstuen in Oslo (1998); the New Café of the National Gallery in Oslo (2002), an honourable mention for her lighting design by Norwegian Lighting Award; the headquarters of the Rasmussen Group in Kristiansand (2004) and the Boston Consulting Group (2009), and the new offices of TV Norge in Oslo (2010).

Her special focus on context and the human dimension has been rewarded with numerous recognitions, such as the Honorary Fellowship in the American Institute of Architects (USA) in 2011, and the National Building Quality Award first prize for the Gjerdrum secondary school in 2010 and honourable mention for the Fokus Bank in 2006.
Between 2009 and 2011, an extended international tour organized in collaboration with the National Museum of Architecture of Oslo presented her works worldwide.
In 2012 she was awarded the Eco-Lighthouse Environmental Certification for her commitment to sustainability in her designs, another aspect typical of her latest works.
Jarmund’s work has been featured in recent exhibitions such as the “New Nordic” show at the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Fredensborg (Denmark) in 2012 and “Selected Works” at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts School of Architecture in Copenhagen in 2010, as well as in numerous group shows on Norwegian architecture.

She holds conferences and lectures in Europe and America, and a number of international publications have showcased the work of her firm.
Her work has been widely disseminated at the national and international level, and a monograph of her works in English and Norwegian was published in 2008 by Pax Forlag, with essays by Kenneth Frampton and Bente Sand and photographs by Per Maning.
