Deyan Sudjic writes in the prologue to his volume on MBM’s work, published in 2006 by RBA Editores, that studio MBM is not interested in creating aggressive, spectacular or “signature” architectural projects, but the value of their work lies in its recognisability and ability to express their cultural roots. The five partners who direct MBM (Martorell, Bohigas, Mackay, Capdevila and Gual) have a creative approach combining digital representation tools with freehand design. When it was founded in 1951, the studio set itself the goal of opposing Francoist style by drawing on the experiences of modern Italian architecture and the critical approach demonstrated by its contemporaries in Milan and Rome.
